PAWEL SMAL- OWNER OF SMAL WOODWORKING STUDIO
BAUHAUS STUDIO-ART-FURNITURE CERTIFIED AND OPENLANDS TREEKEEPER CERTIFIED

Pawel describes his approach to woodworking as a search for the soul of the tree. He is known for a minimalist, simple aesthetic, yet employs advanced, complex methods of furniture making in solid wood. His designs are organic, tailored to each job and the individual needs of his clients. Pawel’s passion for exploring new possibilities in building and design has resulted in collaborations with architects, Chicago artists, and numerous commercial and individual clients throughout the United States.

Pawel studied with the late master craftsman and artist Berthold Schwaiger, completing his apprenticeship in studio-art furniture construction and design at Bauhaus Apprenticeship Institute in 2004. Following his study at the Chicago Bauhaus Academy, Pawel proceeded to start his own fine woodworking business, Smal Woodworking Studio, specializing in studio furniture, table and cabinet making, built-in furniture, and architectural millwork. In 2008, he continued developing and exploring his craft, apprenticing for over a year with renowned furniture maker Jeff Miller.

As a woodshop instructor at Rebuilding Exchange, Pawel shared his extensive knowledge, informing and guiding students in furniture design and woodworking technique. He keeps himself involved in the life cycle of wood as a certified tree keeper with Open Lands, an organization concerned about the preservation of nature in the Chicago land area. His love for the elements and working with his hands propels him to the water, where you may spot him sailing in the Regatta.
